Nera selects Moltech Power Systems to power it's latest Satellite Phone

Nera World Phone

When developing the power source for the latest range of portable satellite terminals, Nera looked to their long term battery partner Moltech Power Systems for a high energy reliable battery solution. Moltech already supplied batteries for the 'Nera WorldPhone’ and the ‘Nera WorldCommunicator’ devices, but something even more special was required to meet the higher energy density requirements of the new “Nera WorldPro 1000’ broadband capable device.

"Satellite technology has really moved forward", states Nera, "now capable of delivering simultaneous voice, SMS and broadband data up to 384kbps from a pocket-sized device. The original Nera WorldPhone device was more than twice the size and used a relatively large 36Wh battery. The new Nera WorldPro 1000 device required a far smaller battery, but as we still needed over 17Wh of the energy, we were really asking Moltech to think hard!”

The highest energy density lithium ion cells were coupled with custom designed protection and gas gauging electronics all packed using a soft pack format to minimise space within the Nera device. “We are used to working hard for our customers” said Neil Oliver, Senior Technical Manager for Moltech Power Systems Europe. Our long relationship with Nera is typical of many of the OEM’s we serve, they rely on us to provide the best solution on time and within budget”.

The Nera WorldPro 1000 has a broad range of applications. Its high portability and light weight make it versatile and an ideal tool for professionals who have to work at different sites - including remote areas without communications infrastructure - and who rely on compact, lightweight equipment to carry out their tasks. The largest segments are expected to be defence and military, aid and rescue, construction and mining, media and printed press, civil government, oil and gas.
